from a Twitter Newbie \u2013 and My New Twitter Commandments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After creating my Twitter account about a year ago, I gave up rather quickly, feeling frustrated that I couldn\u2019t get lots of followers quickly and that I needed to be on it for hours a day in order for it to work.\u00a0 I now know that I was wrong, and have recently started really getting back into Twitter.\u00a0 Now I think I get it much better than previously, and have vowed to give it another shot.<\/p>\n<p>I have noticed a few things, though \u2013 there is a lot of clutter on Twitter.\u00a0 It seems like everyone there is a social media or SEO expert, giving advice on how to succeed on Twitter.\u00a0\u00a0 Those who aren\u2019t are selling programs for getting tens of thousands of followers. \u00a0I like to think that I\u2019m smart enough not to fall for that.\u00a0 How can there be any quality from buying your way to followers?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also noticed that getting followers is the end-all-be-all for many people, so everything they do has the sole purpose of getting more followers.\u00a0 I fell for it myself for a while \u2013 retweeting something I really didn\u2019t care about just to get noticed.\u00a0 Complimenting someone when I didn\u2019t really mean it in the hopes they\u2019d follow me, and following people I had no interest in just so they would hopefully follow me back.\u00a0 All that has left me feeling shallow and phony \u2013 if that\u2019s what Twitter\u2019s about, I want no part of it.<\/p>\n<div>But I don\u2019t feel that that\u2019s what Twitter\u2019s about.\u00a0 I think that if you find your way through the fluff, you can find some quality people.\u00a0 So here are my own commandments for proceeding with Twitter, my way:<\/div>\n<p>1.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I will not follow anyone unless I am genuinely interested in them.\u00a0 This may mean I will have less followers, but at least they will be genuine.<br \/>\n2.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I will not retweet something unless I really like it.<br \/>\n3.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I will not compliment someone unless I really mean it.<br \/>\n4.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Everything I do on Twitter will be real, not just in order to get followers.<br \/>\n5.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I will give to the Twitter community: quality posts, discussions, questions, answers.<\/p>\n<p>So obviously these things apply to real life also \u2013 funny that it took Twitter to remind me to be real, to give, and hopefully I will get back.\u00a0 Be a resource, and people will respond.\u00a0 Only time will tell if this will work for me on
